Discover a four-step framework for delivering effective feedback that inspires growth and improvement in your team.

Welcome to the Today’s Leader podcast, where we focus on building tomorrow’s best leaders today. In this episode, we’re diving into a crucial aspect of leadership: giving constructive feedback without discouraging your team. Feedback is essential for growth, but when delivered poorly, it can demotivate rather than inspire. Today, we’ll explore how to make feedback a tool for success, not criticism.

Step 1: Set the Right Intentions

The first step in delivering effective feedback is setting the right intentions. Encourage your team to approach feedback with a growth mindset. The goal is to help, not criticize. Be open and upfront about this. Choose the right time and setting for sensitive conversations, ensuring privacy is maintained.

Step 2: Use the SBI Model

The SBI model stands for Situation, Behavior, and Impact. It’s a structured way to deliver feedback:

  • Situation: Identify the specific situation. For example, “During yesterday’s call…”
  • Behavior: Describe the observed behavior. For instance, “You interrupted the discussion…”
  • Impact: Explain the impact of the behavior. “The customer was confused…”

This model ensures feedback is clear, specific, and less personal.

Step 3: Balance Critique with Encouragement

Balance is key. Highlight what’s working well before addressing areas for improvement. Avoid the feedback sandwich approach, which can dilute the message. Instead, end feedback with support and options for improvement. Ask, “How can I help you in this area?”

Step 4: Focus on Solutions and Growth

Shift the focus from what went wrong to how to improve. Avoid blame and instead offer coaching and resources. Ask, “How can we do better?” This approach fosters a culture of growth and improvement.

Challenge for the Week

Identify one team member who would benefit from your feedback. Use the SBI method and offer support to help them improve.
